USPS® Service Delivery Times

Robert J Sullivan

One of the most frequent questions we are asked at Max-It, in one form or another is, “how long will it take for my customers/prospects to receive my direct mail marketing piece, once you’ve delivered it to the USPS?”

The simple answer is, it depends. This obviously has no explanatory power and, needless to say, is usually not acceptable. Below we’ll discuss the most important considerations which factor into this equation.

Speed vs Cost

The first factor is which USPS service was selected for the mail project. All things being equal, you pay more for faster service with the post office, so this is usually the most important consideration. Another point to consider is, by and large, the slower classes of mail have a wider delivery window than the faster classes.

Distance to Destination

The next element which has a direct impact on delivery time is the distance from the origin location to the destination. Many mailings are not saturated to one specific geographic area, therefore the delivery time can vary wildly for two recipients of the same direct mail piece, which are mailed via the same service.
